TIDBITS
excerpt from RBR Publishing
INTERBIKE REPORT
Part 1
|
Ed Pavelka, of
RBR reports from INTERBIKE, the largest cycling
tradeshow in North America... at the end of day
one of three, he filed this report... Part 1:
Merckx EMX-5 & EMX-3
Eddy Merckx didn't officially open
Interbike, but he hosted one of the show's first
functions -- the world premier of his 2 new road
bikes. Looking slimmer and healthier than he did
several years ago, The Greatest Rider Ever
personally lifted the black covers off the
Merckx EMX-5 and EMX-3, then beamed
as the crowd applauded. Both carbon beauties
will be available as frames/forks in 9 sizes
from 44 to 60 cm and cost $3,750 and $2,600,
respectively. The EMX-3 also will be offered as
a full-Ultegra bike for $3,600.
Interestingly,
these 2 frames have resulted from an alliance
between Cycles Eddy Merckx and Cicli Pinarello
expressly for the U.S. market. Both brands are
distributed in the U.S. by Gita Sporting Goods
of Charlotte, North Carolina, which says the
association is designed to increase the
companies' "knowledge base of the processes and
materials" used for making high-end frames and
to accelerate bringing new products to market.
Although Merckx and Pinarello will sometimes
build with identical materials (such as Toray
carbon fiber), Gita's Sandy Nicholls says
they will remain independent companies with
distinct frame designs.

Pedro's Vise-Whip
If you have a home service and repair area or
will be creating one as an off-season project
(check
Your Home Bicycle
Workshop),
this is a nifty new tool. Pedro's Vise-Whip
($70) replaces a chain whip to help make
cassette removal easier. It locks onto any cog
from 11 to 23 teeth with a Vice-Grip-type
handle, firmly holding the cassette so you can
unscrew the lock ring. A chain whip isn't
difficult to use but the Vice-Whip is even
simpler and is worth considering if you want
pro-quality shop tools.
Hutchinson Road Tubeless Tires
The French tire company that doesn't sound
French is beginning to grow its selection of
tubeless road tires. Tubeless technology is
buoyed by the fact that more wheel makers are
producing compatible rims. In addition to
pioneering Shimano, road tubeless (RT) wheelsets
are reportedly being included by Campagnolo,
Fulcrum, Roval, and A-Class in their 2009
product lines. In response, Hutchinson is adding
2 tubeless tires to its original Fusion 2.
The Atom is a 270-gram, 700x23C
high-performance tire while the Intensive
is more appropriate for the masses at 700x25C
and 320 grams. It's the widest and beefiest RT
model, featuring a puncture-resistant belt, a
long-wearing tread compound and Hutchinson's MTB-inspired
HardSkin anti-cut sidewalls. The technology is
still pricey -- an
Atom tubeless tire retails for $100 while an
Intensive is priced at $85 -- thanks to top-end
materials, manufacturing precision and years of
R&D to pay off. The cost will eventually drop as
more wheel makers and tire companies enter the
market. Specialized is helping validate road
tubeless with a compatible carbon rim and a tire
made to its specifications by Hutchinson.
