Product recall: Keo pedals.
Many Suncoasters ride KEO
pedals so this is an important announcement. Look Cycle
USA is recalling 40,000 pairs of Keo pedals following
reports of breaking axles. Fourteen incidents have come
to light, resulting in various injuries to riders. All
recalled pedals are black and include the Keo Classic,
Keo Sprint, Keo HM and Keo Carbon.

cycling events take place in the first week and will be
televised on this schedule:
Aug. 9 -- Men's Road Race. NBC and NBC HD, 10 a.m.

NBC, the parent network of the Olympics, doesn't specify
exact times that events will be shown. Here is the most
specific schedule that's available at this time. RBR has
preserved it for you on a special RBR web page at
http://www.roadbikerider.com/olympicstv.htm
NBC's cycling page is at
http://www.nbcolympics.com/cycling/index.html.
You'll find video clips and perhaps be able to see
highlights of races.

Lance Armstrong will
be on the starting line of the Leadville Trail 100-mile
(161-km) mountain
bike race high in the Colorado Rockies. The 7-time Tour
de France champ has been living and training at altitude
for 2 weeks but downplays his Leadville chances, saying
he'll be happy with a top-5 finish in the 15th annual
"Race Across the Sky." The favorite is defending
champion Dave Wiens, 43, a veteran endurance
athlete and mountain biker who set the 6:58 course
record last year in beating Floyd Landis (not
racing this time) by 2 minutes.
Says Lance, "I don't
think I'm in it to win it, as they say. A race like this
takes a lot of experience and endurance. [Wiens] has
that." The race begins at the old mining town with a
thousand riders making the 50-mile out-and-back trek.
Leadville is at 10,500 feet (3,185 meters) and the race
climbs from there. "I fully expect to get beat up,"
Armstrong told the Associated Press. Learn more about
this event and others that day here:

TRY THIS ON YOUR
NEXT RIDE -- Rev Up for Fall
Rides
In the dog days of
August, it's common to lack motivation for training.
You're pretty fit, you've ridden several goal
events, and you're just not excited about continuing
to work out. Riding, yes. Training, ugh!
Well, if you can
muster enough enthusiasm for just 8 special workouts
this month, you can enjoy an increase in speed and
power. We're talking 2 training rides a week for a
potential 3% performance increase, depending on your
fitness when you start.
These are tough
little training sessions, of course. You need 'em
tough if you're already in good shape and don't want
your fitness to backtrack. But by doing this
training twice a week, you can goof off at least 3
other days by resting or spinning easily.
After a good warm
up, pick one of these workouts:
-
Motorhead.
Ride for 15 minutes on flat or rolling terrain
at about 85% of your max heart rate (or 8.5 on a
perceived-exertion scale of 10). Keep your
effort constant, which means it will feel "hard"
by the time you reach the last minute. Then roll
around at least 10 minutes at an easy pace to
cool down.
-
Killer
Hills. Ride 2 uphill intervals of 5 minutes
each at about 90% of max heart rate, or 9 on
your exertion scale. (No hill? Then bore into a
headwind.) The effort should feel "very hard"
during the last minute. Spin easily for 3
minutes between the intervals and for at least
10 minutes after the last one.
-
Mad Dash.
Sprint all out for 30 seconds. Spin easily for
4 minutes. Then repeat for a total of 3 sprints.
Pretend that Mark Cavendish is trying to
come around (you would actually have no chance,
mate). Then cool down with more easy spinning
If you can muster
the suds to do 8 of these workouts between now and
Labor Day (Sept. 1), you'll be feeling strong and
fast when cooler air rejuvenates you for fall
events.
