Product recall: Keo pedals.  Many Suncoasters ride KEO pedals so this is an important announcement. Look Cycle USA is recalling 40,000 pairs of Keo pedals following reports of breaking axles. Fourteen incidents have come to light, resulting in various injuries to riders. All recalled pedals are black and include the Keo Classic, Keo Sprint, Keo HM and Keo Carbon. VISIT THIS SITE FOR COMPLETE INFO AND PHOTOS ON HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOUR PEDALS ARE PART OF THE RECALL.

Well. let me say first that I've really enjoyed the Olympics this year -- the swimming, gymnastics, track and beach volleyball were actually quite exciting. I do admit I was disappointed I either missed the cycling or couldn't find it!  Scott of RBR Publishing has a spin on this that will likely bring you a smile. Enjoy!  Christine

SCOTT'S SPIN -- Gamesmanship

Of the 38,000 hours of Olympic television coverage here in the U.S., I missed all 4 minutes of road cycling. Why oh why did I have to use the bathroom during the rain delay of that 3-hour quarterfinal softball game?

But I'm not here to whine about cycling's TV profile at the 2008 Beijing Games. No, I'm solutions oriented -- I've carefully studied what makes various sports appealing to American network programmers, so that by the 2012 London Games cycling will be poised for blanket coverage. People, we have 4 years to implement these changes:

  • Sequins.  I'm talking girls' gymnastics here. Sorry -- women's gymnastics, if by women you mean 4-foot-9, 80-pound, 12-year-old Chinese females. Regardless, the tykes' cuteness, amplified by sequins, makeup and shiny uniforms, equals copious airtime. Hey, cyclists already shave their legs and look good in Lycra. Would it kill them to glue a few sparkles on those well-defined cheekbones?

  • Multiple events.  Why do I know what Michael Phelps eats for breakfast and the name of his first pet turtle? Because he won more gold medals than I have moldy water bottles. And he stockpiled that hardware because swimming has more events than I have non-matching cycling socks. Sprints, middle distance, long distance, freestyle, butterfly, breast stroke, backstroke, relays, medleys, Marco Polo marathons. Why is road cycling stuck with 1 measly time trial? There should be a 5-mile TT, a 10-miler, a TT relay, a recumbent time trial . . . .

  • Beach vibe.  Beach volleyball rules primetime, so let's get in on the action. Road biking in the sand might not fly, but why not mountain biking? Just add some singletrack through palm trees, beach balls and crying kids. But what really sells beach volleyball is the skimpy outfits.

Just picture George Hincapie in a tankini.   :)

SHOW N GO RIDES*

BE A RIDE LEADER OR SWEEP

Show n Go Rides* for SUNDAY & WEEKDAYS offer lots of choices! CLICK HERE TO GO THERE NOW --

Thursday 5:30PM IS OUR NEWEST "SHOW N GO" RIDE. Leaves from Chainwheel Drive, Drew St., Clearwater and either travels to Clearwater Beach, down to the Frog Pond restaurant and back for approx. 40 miles or north to Fred Howard Park and back.  This is strictly a "show n go" ride. No ride leaders, maps or sag.  (pace range is 18-22mph). Contact Ruth for more info: rridge2@tampabay.rr.com

*Show and go rides are advertised as a service to club members and guest riders. The are not official club rides. They do not include route maps, ride leaders or sweep. The Suncoast Cycling Club assumes no responsibility for individual riders' safety, road hazards or riding conditions. All participants are expected to ride safely and responsibly when sharing the road with motor vehicles or sharing trails with other recreational users.

Please show your appreciation for this great club by being a ride leader or sweep. Just once every few months would be enough if more stepped up! Our survey results showed that a ride leader and sweep was desired, but we can't meet the need without your help. Don't let this fall on the same small group every week.
